Barred Owl in Cascara Tree

Barred Owl in Cascara Tree

From: $53.00

A thoroughly soaked Barred Owl (Strix varia) watches me from its perch in a Cascara tree (Rhamnus purshiana) along the North Fork of the Middle Fork Willamette River. The Barred Owl, whose native range is historically east of the Rocky Mountains is a relative newcomer to the Pacific Northwest, and is often mistaken for a Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis). The Barred Owl is slightly larger, and more aggressive than the Spotted Owl, and is suspected of contributing to the decline of the latter’s numbers throughout its home range in Western Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Willamette National Forest. Lane County, Oregon West Cascades.
