Beach Wolf Spider (Arctosa littoralis) Oregon Coast

From: $65.00

An excellent example of the Beach Wolf Spider (Arctosa littoralis) and its superb use of camouflage against the fine grained sand of Oregon’s Coastal Dunes. Beach Wolf Spider’s average 1.0 – 1.5 cm in diameter, with a male life expectancy of one year, and females between three and four years. When the female lays her eggs, she attaches them beneath her abdomen. Upon hatching, the young ride atop her back until large enough to increase their perilous odds of survival. Like many ground spiders, the Beach Wolf Spider’s don’t make webs, but rather stalk and pursue their prey vigorously much as do wolves, and thus the origin of their common name. These beautiful spiders hide beneath debris during the day and become active at night, when they hunt. Tahkenitch Beach, Siuslaw National Forest along Oregon’s Central Coast.
