Crack in the Ground – Christmas Valley

Crack in the Ground – Christmas Valley

From: $53.00

Hidden thirty feet below the surrounding high desert, a hiker explores the snowy confines of Crack in the Ground in Oregon’s fascinating Christmas Valley.  Crack in the Ground is a narrow and winding chasm that varies in width from a few feet to over 20 feet in places. The fissure extends for over two miles in length, with sheer walls reaching heights of up to 70 feet. The depth and width of the crack can vary along its length, creating a maze-like network of passages and chambers.  This unique geologic feature is believed to have formed when seismic and volcanic eruptions of nearby Green Mountain, and its Four Craters Lava Field resulted in deflation of surrounding surface rock, and the subsequent tension fractures which became Crack in the Ground.
