Wizard Falls on the Metolius River
The Metolius River is unlike any other in Oregon. Emerging full and clear from springs at the base of Black Butte, it flows cold and steady year‑round, fed by snowmelt that has traveled unseen through miles of porous volcanic rock. This constant volume makes the Metolius a river of remarkable clarity and beauty, a living testament to the volcanic history of the Cascade Range.
For much of the 20th century, the river was known for a striking cascade called Wizard Falls. About twelve feet high, the falls dropped into the Metolius just downstream from the river’s source. But in 1947, construction of the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery diverted the springs that fed the waterfall into rearing ponds for trout and salmon. Since then, the falls have been dry except during brief times when the hatchery shuts down for maintenance.
Today, many visitors mistake the lively rapids near Lower Bridge for Wizard Falls, not realizing that the true cascade has been silent for decades. Yet the name endures, a reminder of the river’s rich past and the ways human history and geology intersect.
The geology of the Metolius Basin explains the river’s remarkable steadiness. Layers of basalt and andesite, erupted long ago from the High Cascades, act like a sponge, capturing snowmelt and slowly releasing it into the river. The result is a waterway that runs cold and clear in every season, supporting vibrant forests and a thriving fishery along its banks. Though Wizard Falls itself no longer flows, the Metolius continues to enchant those who walk its shores — a river shaped by volcanoes, underground aquifers, and the patient work of time.
