Shore Acres State Park

Shore Acres State Park sits high on sandstone cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just south of Coos Bay. Known for its sweeping ocean views and colorful gardens, it is one of the most striking parks on the Oregon Coast.

The land was once the grand estate of timber baron Louis J. Simpson, who built a mansion and ballroom here in the early 1900s. Although the house was later lost and eventually removed, the gardens he envisioned were restored and expanded, ensuring his legacy continues in living color.

The formal gardens are designed for year‑round interest. In spring, tulips, daffodils, and rhododendrons create a vibrant display. Summer brings roses, dahlias, and flowering perennials. Even in winter, the grounds shine during the annual Holiday Lights, when hundreds of thousands of tiny bulbs transform the gardens into a glowing wonderland.

Beyond the gardens, trails lead to cliffside viewpoints where waves thunder against the shore. On stormy days, the surf explodes in towering plumes, drawing photographers eager to capture the drama. From December through June, gray whales can often be seen migrating just offshore, best viewed from the enclosed observation building that now stands where Simpson’s mansion once rose.

Shore Acres also connects by trail to Sunset Bay and Cape Arago State Parks, offering a full day of exploration. Together, the three parks showcase sheltered beaches, wildlife‑rich tide pools, and headlands alive with seabirds and sea lions.

Blending the elegance of cultivated gardens with the raw power of the Pacific, Shore Acres offers an unforgettable experience in every season. Whether you come for the flowers, the ocean views, or the simple pleasure of a coastal walk, this park captures the essence of Oregon’s southern coast.
