On a beautiful blue sky day in early May, we are looking southeast towards Kitson Ridge and the Cascade Crest. In the distance you can see a snow covered Mt. Fuji, and below, nestled into its broad glacial carved valley, is the Salt Creek drainage. The massive ‘big green hills’ which surround the Oakridge area comprise the southern most portion of the Willamette National Forest, and contain the largest valley complex within the Oregon Cascades. Here, The North Fork of Middle Fork Willamette River, Salt Creek, Hills Creek, Salmon Creek and the Middle Fork Willamette converge at Oakridge, and the Willamette River becomes a significant stream as it heads west towards the Willamette Valley.
