A native of the Hawaii Islands, the Laukahi Fern (Dryopteris wallichiana) is a member of the Wood Fern family (Dryopteridaceae). I found this specimen unfurling itself in Hendricks Park in Eugene Oregon. Initially I struggled to identify this species until I found the appropriately named “Ferns Of Hendricks Park” by Martin Sage. As it turns out Dryopteris ferns are found scattered across the globe, and are native to the Himalayas, Hawaii, Mexico and Jamaica. The fern pictured here, is indigenous to Hawaii.
