In the gloom of an approaching storm, the boat slip at Detroit Lake State Park merges into a moody landscape of gray light. Resting at an elevation of 1,565 feet, Detroit Reservoir is a 3,500 acre impoundment of the Breitenbush and North Santiam Rivers. Completed in 1953, and administered by the Army Corps of Engineers, this large reservoir is part of the greater Willamette Valley Projects, and was designed primarily to serve as part of the regions flood control infrastructure. Today, Detroit Reservoir also provides municipal drinking water to much of the north Willamette Valley, including the City of Salem, and is a major recreation destination for people living in densely populated northwest Oregon. In recent years, ongoing and worsening regional drought conditions are seeing the reservoir only rarely filled to capacity, and in most years it’s low enough to impact the quality of both its drinking water, and severely impeded the lakes recreation functions. Willamette National Forest, Oregon West Cascades.
