At dawn, Sparks Lake lies in stillness beneath the imposing silhouettes of Broken Top and South Sister, its glassy surface holding first light, like a secret of what the day and what might come. This high mountain lake, nestled at the edge of the Cascade Range in Central Oregon, reflects a near-perfect mirror of the volcanic peaks that rise behind it—sharply ridged, snow-laced, and timeless.
The first light creeps across the sky in shades of orange and and pale morning rose, casting shadow over wetlands and crags of shoreline basalt. Broken Top’s jagged ridgeline catches the light first, its rust-red rock blushing with the warmth of sunrise. Then South Sister glows with soft alpenglow, her massive, snow-veined form bathed in a brief orange glow and alpine pink. The reflections double the drama—sky and mountain meeting perfectly in water so still it barely ripples.
Mist often lingers here in the early hours, drifting above the surface like mountain breath. It threads through the forest of lodgepole pine and along the lava rock , blurring the boundary between land and sky. Birdsong rises in the distance—sandhill cranes, perhaps, or the soft whistle of a nighthawk returning to roost. The air is crisp, scented faintly of pine and cold stone.
