Siuslaw River Bridge
In the heart of Florence, Oregon, the Siuslaw River Bridge spans one of the Coast’s great estuaries with a design that is as graceful as it is practical. Completed in 1936, the bridge was part of Conde B. McCullough’s ambitious vision to connect the Oregon Coast with a continuous highway.
Before its construction, travelers relied on ferries to cross the Siuslaw River—a slow and uncertain journey, especially in poor weather. With the bridge’s opening, Florence was firmly linked to the growing Highway 101, transforming the small fishing town into a more accessible coastal destination.
The bridge stretches 1,568 feet, with reinforced concrete approaches leading to a central bascule drawspan that allows boats to pass upriver. Two elegant tied arches frame the drawspan, their curves balanced by the crisp vertical lines of Art Deco pylons. Decorative Gothic-inspired elements, including pointed arches and finials, add detail unusual for a highway bridge, reflecting McCullough’s belief that public works should be beautiful as well as functional.
Built during the Great Depression with support from the Public Works Administration, the project provided much-needed jobs and left Florence with a lasting landmark. Generations later, the bridge continues to shape community life.
A careful restoration in 2005 strengthened its structure while preserving its original character. Today, the Siuslaw River Bridge remains a defining feature of Florence’s waterfront, admired by residents and travelers alike for its marriage of utility and artistry.
