Secret Beach and the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor
On Oregon’s southern coast, the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor offers a rugged shoreline where forested cliffs meet the Pacific Ocean in sudden, dramatic vistas. Stretching twelve miles between Brookings and Gold Beach, the corridor is a mosaic of coves, arches, and sea stacks—an ever-changing landscape shaped by surf, wind, and time. Among its many hidden gems, none captures the imagination quite like Secret Beach.
Though no longer entirely secret, the beach retains an air of discovery. A steep footpath winds through thickets of salal and evergreen huckleberry before dropping to a narrow stretch of sand framed by towering headlands. The descent feels like leaving one world and entering another: the hush of the forest replaced by the crash of waves and the steady pull of the tide. At low tide, visitors can walk between small coves connected by sandbars, while high tide isolates each pocket of beach, lending the place an almost otherworldly solitude.
The scenery here is not only visual but ecological. Off the shoreline, migrating gray whales pass in spring and fall, while sea lions and harbor seals rest on the offshore rocks. The air carries the calls of black oystercatchers and the occasional peregrine falcon, nesting on the sheer cliffs.
