Oregon note cards of Smith Rock State Park, and the Crooked River at the height of autumn color. These premium 5×7″ greeting cards of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, are blank inside, come with embossed envelopes, and a resealable clear sleeve.   Smith Rock and the Crooked River displays a complex interplay of geologic history, erosion, and hydrology, resulting in one of Oregon’s most iconic landscapes. Located in Central Oregon near the town of Terrebonne, Smith Rock is a striking formation of volcanic origin that rises dramatically above the Crooked River, which meanders along its base. The cliffs and spires of Smith Rock are not only visually impressive but are also a record of the region’s deep geologic past. The Crooked River, meanwhile, has played a pivotal role in sculpting the rock over time, carving the canyon and exposing layers of ancient volcanic material. Smith Rock is primarily composed of welded tuff, a volcanic rock formed from ash and debris ejected during explosive eruptions. This material, known locally as the Smith Rock Tuff, was deposited during the middle Miocene, approximately 29 to 15 million years ago, as part of a series of massive volcanic events associated with the Crooked River Caldera complex. Subsequent flows of basalt, linked to the Columbia River Basalt Group, later covered parts of the region. Over time, tectonic uplift and faulting helped raise and fracture the tuff layers, setting the stage for erosion to reveal the spires and cliffs seen today. The Crooked River, a tributary of the Deschutes River, has been instrumental in shaping this landscape. As it flows northward through the arid high desert, it has incised deeply into the plateau, exploiting faults and zones of weakness in the rock. The river’s erosive power over millions of years created the steep-walled canyon that frames Smith Rock, gradually exposing the underlying tuff and basalt layers. The depth and orientation of the canyon largely reflect the path of least resistance, dictated by both bedrock structure and hydrologic forces. The juxtaposition of the Crooked River and Smith Rock creates a unique geomorphic setting. The river’s meanders wrap tightly around the base of the rock, accentuating the sheer vertical walls and providing a continuous source of erosional force. Periodic flooding and sediment transport contribute to ongoing change along the canyon floor, although the river is now partially controlled by upstream dams. Seasonal fluctuations in water flow also influence vegetation patterns and habitat conditions in the riparian corridor, contrasting sharply with the dry, juniper-dominated uplands above. Ecologically, the river and rock form an interdependent system. The Crooked River provides water and habitat for fish, including native redband trout, and supports a narrow but important riparian ecosystem. Raptors, such as golden eagles, bald eagles and peregrine falcons, nest along the cliffs of Smith Rock, benefiting from the vertical habitat and foraging opportunities the riverine canyon provides. The combination of vertical relief and flowing water creates a microclimate in the canyon that sustains a greater diversity of plant and animal species than the surrounding plateau.
