Old-Growth Douglas-fir Forests of Oregon’s West Cascades

Old-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forests in Oregon’s western Cascade Range represent one of the most complex and ecologically important ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. Found in places like the Willamette National Forest, these stands typically develop over 400 years or more and are characterized by massive Douglas-firs often exceeding 200 feet in height. The canopy is layered, with shade-tolerant species such as western hemlock, Pacific silver fir, and western redcedar filling lower levels and creating a multi-tiered structure. The understory is diverse, containing vine maple, salal, Oregon grape, sword fern, and extensive moss cover. Large snags and fallen logs provide essential microhabitats, storing moisture, cycling nutrients, and supporting fungi, amphibians, and small mammals. Mycorrhizal fungi associated with Douglas-fir roots play a critical role in nutrient exchange and forest regeneration. Wildlife in these forests depends heavily on their structural complexity. The northern spotted owl and marbled murrelet, both threatened species, rely on the dense canopy and broad-limbed old trees for nesting and hunting. Pileated woodpeckers, flying squirrels, and Pacific giant salamanders are also closely tied to old-growth features such as decaying wood and persistent shade. Historically, infrequent but intense wildfires, occurring every two to five centuries, shaped these forests by creating gaps and allowing some stands to reach great age. Windthrow, insects, and disease added further structural diversity. Today, fire suppression and past logging have reduced old-growth extent, fragmenting what remains. These forests are also critical to watershed health. Their soils and decayed wood retain moisture, while deep canopies regulate streamflow and maintain cool conditions necessary for salmon and trout. Their high biomass makes them among the most important terrestrial carbon stores in North America.
