Saint Mary’s Catholic Church – Mount Angel, Oregon

Saint Mary’s Catholic Church – Mount Angel, Oregon

From: $53.00

The history of Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Mount Angel is closely tied to the development of the Mount Angel Abbey and the greater Benedictine community found throughout Oregon.  The story of Saint Mary’s Church begins with the establishment of Mount Angel Abbey in 1882 by Benedictine monks from Switzerland. The monks were seeking a location in the United States to establish a new monastery and chose the verdant rolling hills of Oregon’s Willamette Valley for this endeavor.  As the Benedictine and Germanic communities surrounding the Mount Angel Abbey continued to grow, there arose a need for a proper church, and the construction of Saint Mary’s Church commenced in 1912. Designed in the Romanesque Revival style, the church reflected the architectural traditions of European monastic communities and was completed merely a year later in 1913.  Today, Saint Mary’s Cathedral stands as a prominent landmark in Mount Angel and continues to serve as a spiritual center for the Benedictine and broader Catholic community throughout the north Willamette Valley. Its historic architecture and beautiful interior, make it a place of pilgrimage and worship for many visitors and locals alike.  Molalla County, Oregon.
