This unique image of the South Sister and Broken Top was taken from the summit of Spencer Butte using a 500mm f/4.0 telephoto lens. From Spencer Butte to the summit of the South Sister is approximately 60 miles “as the crow flies”. The yellow color cast in this image isn’t the product of a yellow filter being used; but rather is a consequence of the telephoto lens’ compression of distance, and its narrow field of view tunneling through 60 miles of sunrise colored atmospheric haze. If you look closely, you can see diagonal rays of sunlight coming down from the right hand side of the image. The next time you see a sunset or sunrise where there is a narrow band of intensely colored sky near the horizon, imagine using a super-telephoto lens to narrow your field of view and photograph an object found in that color band.
