Shore Acres State Park: A Jewel on Oregon’s South Coast
Shore Acres State Park sits on high sandstone cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just south of Coos Bay, Oregon. This scenic park offers stunning views of rocky shores shaped by millions of years of geological activity. Layers of sandstone and shale were formed on ancient ocean floors and later uplifted by tectonic forces, creating dramatic cliffs and wave-battered reefs.
The park’s coastal forests include Sitka spruce and western hemlock, adapted to salty winds and fog. Along the rocky intertidal zones, you can find mussels, sea stars, and anemones thriving in tide pools. Offshore, gray whales pass by during their migrations, and seabirds nest on the cliffs during warmer months.
A key feature of Shore Acres is its beautiful botanical gardens. Originally part of a private estate built in the early 1900s, the gardens showcase a variety of flowering plants like roses, azaleas, and rhododendrons. These cultivated spaces support local wildlife, including hummingbirds and butterflies, linking the natural and human history of the site.
The park’s human story began with timber magnate Louis J. Simpson, who built a mansion and formal gardens here. Though the house was lost to fire, the gardens were preserved when the land became a state park in the 1940s. Today, visitors stroll along trails that wind through native forest and carefully tended flower beds, enjoying the blend of wild and cultivated beauty.
Shore Acres is popular year-round but especially in winter, when powerful ocean storms create spectacular wave displays. Seasonal events like the holiday light show in December add to its appeal.
