Yellow Foot Chanterelle (Cantharellus tubaeformis) emerge from moss along the west slope of Oregon’s Coast Range. The Yellow Foot Chanterelle is a species of edible mushroom that belongs to the family Cantharellaceae. Known for its distinctive yellow to orange color and delicate, hollow stems, it is commonly found in temperate forests, throughout North America and parts of Europe.  Siuslaw National Forest, Lane County, Oregon.

Morphology: The cap of the Yellow Foot Chanterelle is typically 2–5 cm in diameter, convex to nearly flat with a slightly rolled edge. The color ranges from pale yellow to orange-yellow, often fading toward the center.  Unlike true gilled mushrooms, the gills of the Yellow Foot Chanterelle are more like ridges or folds that run down the length of the stem. These gills are closely spaced and have a yellowish hue. The stem is the most distinctive feature, thin, hollow, and a bright yellow-orange, tapering as it rises from the substrate. This is how it got its name “yellow foot.” The spore print is pale yellow, which is another identifying characteristic.

Ecology and Habitat: Mycorrhizal Relationships: The Yellow Foot Chanterelle forms a symbiotic relationship with specific tree species, particularly conifers such as Douglas-fir, spruce, and pine. This type of relationship is known as mycorrhizal, where the fungus exchanges nutrients (such as phosphorus and nitrogen) with the tree roots in exchange for sugars produced through photosynthesis. Preferred Habitat: This species is typically found in temperate coniferous forests and sometimes in mixed woodlands. It grows on the forest floor, often in mossy or needle-littered soils, particularly in areas with adequate moisture. Substrate: The fungus prefers acidic, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and often emerges in areas with consistent, moderate rainfall.
